Socio-environmental systems (SES) are defined as tightly linked social and biophysical subsystems that mutually influence one another through positive and negative feedback, as shown in Figure 1.
The recognition that humans are the primary agents of change in natural system structure and function has led many researchers to adopt the concept of socio-environmental systems (i.e., socio-ecological systems or coupled human-natural systems).
